More than an art class—this is where young artists build their foundation.

Foundations Studio is a small-group art program designed for ages 7–10 who are ready to dig a little deeper into art.

Rather than simply moving from one fun project to the next, students begin to understand the why behind what they create. We explore the elements of art and principles of design—things like color, line, shape, texture, value, pattern, balance, contrast, movement, and more—and learn how artists actually use them to make creative choices.

But this isn’t a sit-down-and-take-notes kind of art class.

We learn by making.

Through drawing, painting, sculpture, collage, printmaking, mixed media, and plenty of experimenting, students discover these concepts through hands-on projects designed to encourage curiosity and individual thinking.

There isn’t one “right” finished piece to copy. Students are given the tools, techniques, and creative challenges—and then encouraged to make the work their own.

THE GOAL?
To help kids move from “Tell me what to make” to “I have an idea.”

Foundations Studio is about developing artistic skills, but it’s just as much about building creative confidence. Students learn to experiment, make decisions, problem-solve, take creative risks, and trust their own ideas.

Because learning how to think like an artist is just as important as learning how to draw, paint, or sculpt.

Unlike my à la carte art classes, Foundations Studio is offered in multi-week sessions with the same small group of artists.

Each session builds upon the skills and concepts we’ve explored before it, while introducing new materials, techniques, and creative challenges. Throughout the year, we’ll work our way through the elements of art and principles of design in a thoughtful progression—but each session is also designed to stand on its own.

Projects will begin and be completed within each session, so there’s no need to worry if your child skips a session along the way. Students can join for an individual session, take a session off, or continue throughout the year for the full Foundations Studio experience.
